UK car manufacturing on the rise
July saw UK manufacturers producing 7% more vehicles than in the same month in 2012, with 128,873 new cars rolling off the production lines, ready for eager buyers. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), who released the figures, a total of 893,263 cars have been manufactured in the UK in 2013 to date. This includes the figures from July, and puts current car production figures up by 1.9% over the same period of 2012.
And buyers are indeed hungry for new cars produced in the UK. Demand of British cars here in Britain was up by over a third (37.5%) in July, though this can also be put down to the forthcoming introduction of the new plates in September.
Production of engines in British factories was also up over a quarter (26.4%) in July, and 2.1% better during January to July compared to last year. It can't all be good news however; the production of commercial vehicles in the UK fell by 11.8%, with only 7,942 vehicles being produced in July. In total, 56,459 commercial vehicles have been manufactured in the UK since January, and this figure is down by 13.3% over the same time period of 2012.
Mike Baunton, the interim chief executive of the SMMT, commented that recovery in Europe is slowly making itself known, and that this will help demand for British motors. Growth in the UK is slowly recovering too, as the figures in the paragraphs above show.
