Sales of cars in the UK at highest in five years
According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a record breaking 400,000 new cars were bought in the UK in September. This is the highest amount of new cars sold in the last 66 months, since March in 2008. The SMMT also stated that around 15% of such cars bought last month were manufactured in the UK, whilst the best-selling model in September was, as expected, the Ford Fiesta.
A spokesperson for the SMMT, Mike Hawes, commented that the growth in new car sales in the UK went to show the growth in the economy and the strengthening confidence in the automotive marketplace.
He added that much of the demand for new cars came from individual motorists instead of large commercial fleet buyers. He cited the ever-improving efficiency of new vehicle models and the savings that they offer as reasons for the surge in interest.
Indeed, whilst September was the 19th month in a row of continued growth in new automotive sales, the demand from businesses and fleet buyers is yet to reach the levels seen back in 2008 before the recession. As these two markets start to improve, the outlook for further growth in the market looks to be sustainable.
He added that "The latest 63-plate should deliver positive results into next year."
