Now is the time to fit your winter tyres

Now is the time to fit your winter tyres
With heavy rain and strong winds set to batter much of the England and Wales this week, and more wintery weather setting foot up in Scotland, a leading car servicing and repair company has given their recommendation to fit tyres appropriate for the time of year.

Instead of waiting until the snow begins to fall and the roads begin to ice over, the company suggests that now is the time to get your vehicle fitted for winter tyres, as not doing so may lead to greater expenditure further down the road. A rise in the amount of sales of winter tyres was seen in October and November this year compared to sales in 2012, but so far December sales have been low, which may mean that drivers are putting off this rather essential purchase until the snow is actually on the ground.

Winter is a time of year to drive especially carefully, not only for your safety, but for the safety of other road users. Bad road conditions can make driving unpredictable, so always make sure you have the correct kit installed, have an emergency kit of warm clothing and some food somewhere in the car, and if the roads are really bad, maybe put off the journey you were planning.

An investigation in 2012 saw that nearly 70% of drivers were unaware of any difference between winter tyres and summer tyres. Tyres specifically built for wintery conditions give cars a far better grip in lower temperatures (7 degrees C and below), and with most of the UK already experiencing these sort of temperatures, the time to get them installed is now.
