Hyundai's Santa Fe wins Euro NCAP safest car in category
In the Large Off-Road 4x4 category, the Hyundai Santa Fe (actual model tested was a 2.2 diesel, 5 seater 'Comfort') won every test to emerge as best in class. This means that the Santa Fe is one of the safest vehicles to ever be tested by Euro NCAP. The organisation, who provide independent assessments of the safety performance of popular cars sold in Europe, also tested other similar vehicles, such as the Range Rover and the Mercedes M-Class.
A total of 36 vehicles were tested by Euro NCAP in 2012. Out of these, eight vehicles scored highly in the different categories of safety performance. These five-star winning vehicles were the Renault Clio, Volvo V40, BMW 3-Series, Fiat 500L, Ford B-Max, Ford Kuga, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Ford Transit. The Santa Fe came top of all these, with a 96% score awarded in the adult occupant section.
The Santa Fe also achieved a 71% score in the pedestrian safety section, which was achieved by Hyundai's new active bonnet system. This is engaged if a vehicle hits a pedestrian, and reduces the impacting forces, also reducing the danger of a severe injury.
