Can you return a car after buying it from a private seller?

Does the Consumer Rights Act cover private car sales?
I have been selling private cars (ie I purchase them from private sellers). Is the Consumer Rights Act in force and therefore would it cover any claims against me as a seller? Would someone be entitled to compensation if the car suffers damage during the process of sale, eg. If a third party steals my keys before I buy the car.
The Consumer Rights Act certainly does not prevent people from selling their own cars to someone else. The Consumer Rights Act only deals with dealing with another person's property. If the car owner allows you to remove it from their possession then no claim can arise against you.
If the car was being sold for example at a car boot sale or similar then the car owner would be able to claim against you for loss or damage. This is a common way for people to sell their cars for less than half the value. If you bought a car at such a sale you would be liable to pay compensation.
Your responsibilities as a seller is to inspect the car before accepting it and provide the buyer with full disclosure of all information. If a car is purchased in bad condition or under a warranty then the car owner has some rights to claim against you as a seller even if they allow you to sell the car. The rights are set out in section 4 of the Consumer Rights Act. These rights would allow a buyer who bought a damaged car from a seller to claim for repairs. If the seller agreed that the car should be repaired then they would be liable to pay compensation for the cost of the repair.
Selling my own car to someone else, if I have an agreement as to the sale price and ownership of the car, and that the car is in good working order, how much of a headache could I be in for? The car has been in my family for the last 30 years or so, it's an old banger I can live without the money for a deposit and I've got one month wages to get me by until payday, I would expect 30 or so from you, which I could have borrowed off a friend and paid you back over a few weeks in time. It's not that difficult. Just call your nearest CSA office and see if they can help you.
If you don't have a local one but are close to a motorway then national offices are the best bet for any issues regarding their products.
Can you return a car after buying it from a private seller?
If I had bought my car from a private seller, could I return it to the seller for a refund? I would like to return it because I'm having some mechanical problems. Yes, you can return a car you buy from a private seller for a refund. The question is, are you allowed to? The reason you can return it is because you have paid for the car, and it's not on a sale agreement (contract of sale) with a private seller, so you have nothing to return. The private seller still has a right to ask you to return it if you return it without a receipt, but that's all.
There is no requirement for you to pay the full amount you agreed to pay for the car when you buy it, but you can pay less than that, or less than the agreed price. In either case, you are not considered to be a buyer until you have paid the full amount you agreed to pay.
If you bought it from a private seller, and they give you a receipt, you are the buyer of that car and you have a right to return it for a refund, but you should ask them for a receipt first.
What rights do I have if I buy a car from a private seller?

If you buy a car from a private seller, you have no legal rights. The seller may not be truthful with you about anything. In fact, you cannot rely on anything the seller says.
Your best bet is to take the car for a test drive. That will give you a chance to get to know it. Also, if the car has a lot of miles on it, don't assume that it is in good condition.
