I have a 1994 Datsun 710 3.0 L 2.0 (I think) Diesel with the air conditioning system replaced. It was working well when we purchased it and is still running fine. The previous owner repainted the car, new mats and door seals etc., but left the old seats in the car, so that you can feel the hard plastic feeling of them. I have had the car off the road since April this year (and I was told that this is not normal to go on this long) as my son has been ill and I have needed to drive the car for the past month as he is on medication which is dangerous in a car and to add to this, we have just bought a new home and the car has been sitting in my husbands garage!

My husband decided that we need to sell the car as we need a bigger one, we don't want it anymore! However, after all the hassle of having the car off the road for this long, how do I know that there aren't other problems I'm unaware of? How do I check the car or if there is a particular car check-list I should use? In the last 2 weeks, I've driven this car maybe twice; the car now is cold to the touch but hot under the bonnet and I did the same thing as when I bought the car last year, a very gentle tick, tick followed by a big tick! It started to overheat and I had to slow down. I took the car to a garage, and they couldn't seem to find any problems.

I'm still a little nervous driving the car without getting it checked. There's no doubt that it is something about the car I'm not aware of and the car is only 8 years old - I know 8 years is not too young, but is it safe to drive for 8 years with some issues, or is it something which will crop up later on? I could ask my husband to take it for a spin once again just to test the engine and make sure it runs smoothly, but I'm afraid that this may mean it'll just go again and that there is another problem!
