Car manufacture in the UK up in October
Car production on a whole for the year is also up for 2013. The SMMT are also expecting this trend to continue, as the market in Europe maintains it's recovery, and demand remains strong both in the EU and at home.
In total 160,854 vehicles were built on UK soil in October, which the SMMT say was a 17.4% increase over the figure for the same month in 2012. And for the whole first ten months of the year, this brings total automotive production in the UK to 1.28 million vehicles, which itself is an increase of 5.4% on the same period of 2012.
The SMMT are placing the increase in production over October firmly in the hands of increased demand from UK-based motorists for British-built cars. Also, with the lack of quality used motors currently on the market, new cars are needed to cover overall demand for new vehicles.
The chief executive of the SMMT, Mike Hawes, also commented on the variety of vehicles produced here in the UK. With over 50 different models produced by over 15 carmakers in Britain, we as a country provide both specialist niche vehicles and market-friendly mass-produced volume, popular both at home and abroad. He also added that with the demand for vehicles in the EU seeing a welcome uptick, the SMMT expect vehicle production here in the UK to remain strong for the foreseeable future.
