British cars for British drivers
Automotive production in the UK rose by 1.1% in the first half of 2013, but has been rising more steadily as of late, with the second quarter of 2013 seeing 4.6% growth, and June alone seeing 10.4% growth.
Despite demand for UK-produced motors in the Euro Zone dampening down, or being eschewed in favour of locally manufactured vehicles, hunger for British made cars is growing in the UK marketplace. In the first half of 2013, the number of cars built in Britain for the UK market shot up by 24.4%.
The SMMT are putting the rise in production levels down to the strength of the automotive manufacturing industry last year, which saw the manufacturing of vehicles rising to the highest level in the last 5 years. They are calling the current figures a 'significant rise' and are optimistic for the rest of the year's output.
The interim chief executive of the SMMT, Mike Baunton, commented: "Our industry is building and developing innovative, high-quality products that appeal to a global customer base and because of this, independent analysts are confident that car output will grow in the long-term despite economic concerns on the continent."
