April sees increase in new car registrations
In their latest release of automotive data, the SMMT gives a figure of 163,357 for new vehicle registrations in April, which is an increase of 14.8% over the same month last year, and additionally signifies the best performing April since 2008, and also the biggest growth in sales for 14 months.
With this boost in figures, the SMMT has changed it's outlook on car sales this year, upping it's forecast to 2.106 million new vehicles to be sold this year. Should this amount of sales be seen, it would mean the market would have experienced a rise of 3% on 2012's sales levels. It would however still not top the figures we were seeing before the recession struck us.
Reasons for such strong sales in April are thought to include a early Easter, giving buyers more free time to shop for a new vehicle, as well as the new 13 plate coming out in March. Private sales also increased in April, being up by almost a third over the previous month.
With the UK outperforming most other countries in Europe with regards to new car sales, the SMMT have released their prediction for 2014 of 2.123 million new vehicles being sold.
