Volkswagen started life in Germany and is famous for developing the cheap to run and buy original VW Beetle. The basic concept of 'the peoples car' was started by Hitler before WW2 along with Ferdinand Porsche.
It wasn't until post-war and the Allied occupation of Germany that the car saw it's first true production run. It was used at first as a marketing tool for the new West Germany and stayed in production for 68 years with the last one's coming off the production line in Mexico in 2003 in total the original Beetle sold 21,529,464 units.
Nowadays the VW group are one of the world's biggest car manufacturers and aim to be the biggest by 2018. Over the years they have remained true to the original peoples car logic, the Golf or Rabbit taking over from the Beetle in this respect and has been a class leader for many years.
VW are as would be expected at the front of the chase for cleaner fuels. Their current range spans the full breadth of the modern car market with every type of car that you can think of being sold by them. Of course the well known reliability of German engineering and customer service are what has helped them to grow to where they are today.
