
SsangYong Motor Company was formed in 1954 and initially called Hadonghwan Motor Company. They started out life producing jeeps for use by the US army. The company was taken over by Ssangyong Business Group in 1988, and in 1991 it began a beneficial partnership with Daimler-Benz.
In 1997 fellow South Korean automobile manufacturer Daewoo bought the controlling stake from SsangYong's parent company, but this was sold off in 2000. After this, vehicle manufacturer SAIC, based in China, bought a 51% stake in the company. In early 2009, the company was put into receivership.
