Proton is Malaysia's biggest car manufacturer which was founded by the government in 1983 with the Countries ex-Prime Minister at it's control. Early Protons used extensively Mitsubushi technology and this continues to this day.
Although many of it's range are/were based on Mitsubushi's the company have been developing it's own skills and technology, which saw the release of it's first in house car released in 2001.
Sales of these budget family sized cars have been a bit of a roller coaster over the years. At one point the small car builder Perodua of which Proton has a large stake actually sold more cars than Proton to become Malaysia's largest car maker. This has now reversed again. 1996 saw Proton acquire the controlling stake of the famous British Sports Car manufacturer Lotus which lead to the company being able to advance it's technology to better benefit their own car range.
It's current models are aimed at the budget end of the family market where they offer value for money products.
