Peugeot can trace it's industrial roots back to the 1700's. In 1882 they manufactured their first vehicles which were penny farthing cycles. They continued to produce bicycles until very recently.
Car manufacturing followed and in 1889 they produced a steam powered car. It was a few years later that they introduced petrol engined cars, and the rest as they say is history.
As with many of the older European car manufacturers, motor racing was a big part of it's early years, helping them to sell more cars.
In 1975 Peugeot took over Citroen after taking a large stake in the ailing French company the previous year, with some major financial backing from the French government at the time. This was the formation of the 'Peugeot Societe Anonyme' the new group aimed to keep the two brands as separate entities within.
Over the years Peugeot has kept it's ties with Motorsport and has many title to it's name. Particularly in the WRC and has been a popular manufacturer for many clubman rally fans, due to there low cost and proven reliability.
Today Peugeot make a range of cars and mopeds aimed more at the budget end of the market with small hatchbacks and larger family vehicles being popular.
