MINI built by BMW in it's UK plant came about when BMW took control of the Rover Group who up until 2000 had produced the Mini classic since 1959. BMW instigated the development of the New MINI in 1995 with Rover developing the car. After BMW sold off the Rover Group they kept the MINI brand and decided to build the car themselves.
In 2001 the new MINI was launched with four model options and one body style. While all of them were fairly nippy and economical it was the use of the name 'Cooper' and in particular the 's' model that upset a lot of the mini classic fans. These two models offered thrilling performance for those who desired it. 2004 saw the launch of a convertible version available for all models in the range.
The MINI 1 was sold in great numbers until 2006 when BMW replaced it with a new model. Including this time a 'wagon' using the historic name 'clubman'.
