Daewoo was one of the biggest Industrial groups in South Korea, with over 20 groups under it's wing. Daewoo Motors as we know them arrived in the UK market in 1995 unusually their whole dealer network was owned by the company.
Their range of cars were based on GM bodyshells but they were built in Korea with their own engines and running gear. Aimed completely at the budget market the cars sold well for a while with Daewoo being rated as one of the top 10 motor manufacturers in the world. The close relationship with General Motors saw them being swallowed up by the giant group, this was instigated by the Kim administration
Nowadays GM use the Daewoo name for the budget models produced and formally sold by it's other mainstream brands Pontiac and Chevrolet.
