Volvo started to produce cars in 1927, over the following years they have developed a reputation for reliability and safety with their cars said to be the safest on the road for years. Volvo also have a strong commercial group which is still owned by the parent company who started it. The cars division is owned by Ford who took control in 1999.

There cars were described by many as being like a brick, it was certainly a case of functionality over style with them. Although Volvo always used powerful engines, due to the weight of them on the road they weren't as nimble as other cars in there class.

The companies interests in producing safe cars has lead to it making many innovations over the years in this area.

Once Ford took over in 1999 things started to change new stylish designs with high performance engines were sold but still with the safety and reliability that Volvo are famed for. This has bought to the brand to a whole new audience and sales have grown steadily ever since.
