Smart were originally developed by Swatch the watch makers. Intending to produce a car that was ideal for modern city driving, allowing low emissions and easy maneuverability, and allowing up to three smart cars to be parked where one normal family saloon would have.
After initial development the Smart car needed more investment so Swatch sought out J.V partners. After a number failed attempts they teamed up with the huge Daimler-Benz group, building a purpose built factory 'smartville' to take the concept to the people.
In the next few years they developed a number of models all designed around the same concept of small eco friendly cars that were ideal for busy city driving and congested parking. With their rather unique styling that is either a love them or hate them design they have struggled to meet the sales expectations that they had for them. New models are being introduced including electric powered cars with the hopes of improving sales of these unique cars.
