Caterham are a well known part of the British motor industry, famous for manufacturing lightweight sports cars such as the Caterham 7. Colin Chapman's Lotus 7 was launched at London Motorshow in 1957, and was at once liked by motorsport enthusiasts as a lightweight and low cost sports car which also shone a light on the race track.
In 1959 Graham Nearn's Caterham Car Services were appointed as a Lotus 7 dealer, and after a successful number of years, decided to purchases the rights to the 7 from Lotus in 1973, who had decided to discontinue the model. Series 4 production was re-started, but this proved unpopular, and so production was switched to a Series 3 model a year later.
